Back of the Net: Rumors, News & Notes

Lots of stuff out there. A no game day for our Ducks is a great opportunity to get caught up.

After Phoenix Coyotes stunner last season and the Dallas Stars off to a perfect 3-0 start this season will bankruptcy become the new strategy for creating a winner?

Pierre Lebrun and Kuklas Korner are reporting that the San Jose Sharks have extended Joe Thornton at $21 million over 3 years…

Expect Dallas Stars to top the trade rumor charts on all the gossip girls blogs. Of course the top names are Brad Richards and Mike Ribiero. Ignore the gossip. Dallas won’t trade Richards or Ribiero so long as they’re in the playoff hunt.

Look for the recently waived and healthy scratch Fabian Brunnstrom to be among the first to go.

Sticking with Dallas. Perhaps the smartest move of any team is Dallas hiring Gary Roberts and putting him in charge of player development. Pass the bean sprouts, eh. Seriously, expect to see results in six weeks.

Atlanta’s Niklas Bergfors is another kid with talent making his way into the doghouse in the early going. If Ramsay can’t use him, GM Rick Dudley won’t keep him around long. Keep a bag packed Nik.

If you think it’s tough going around Anaheim take a net tour to Calgary. Coach Brent Sutter calleda 52 minujte meeting before Friday’s practice. Sound familiar? The top line of Jokinen-Tanguay & Igninla has yet to register a point. The entire team has scored just 3 goals in 3 games. BUT, they’ve only given up 8 goals for an impressive 2.66 GAA.

How ’bout a merger? The Flaming Ducks does sound appetizing.

Speaking of offensive woes teh Vancouver Canucks, the only team our Ducks have beaten, are still waiting for Mikael Samuelsson Ryan Kesler Henrik Sedin Mason Raymond Manny Malhotra Peter Schaefer Jannik Hansen Kevin Bieksa Alex Edler Dan Hamhuis Rick Rypien Tanner Glass Keith Ballard Guillaume Desbiens Andrew Alberts Jeff Tambellini to score their first goal of the season.

Don’t look now but the Philadelphia Flyers may have found a goalie. Sergei Bobrovsky is 2-0 with a .931 SP and a GAA of 2.00. Not too shabby. If this kid is for real and the Flyers stay healthy? Hogtown Homers and Hollywood Hosers can move their planned parade routes to Market Street, Pa.

So you think life as a hockey player is all lush and lobster do you? Try going from the NHL minimum of $500k to $5k a month in the AHL.

Speaking of money. Do you think the NHLPA won any fans when the turned down the NHL’s offer to reduce escrow from 18% to 9%? Instead the NHLPA negotiated a 17% escrow withholding. Let’s see that’s only about a $45 thousand difference on a league minimum contract.

And people wonder why it’s tough to unionize today.

Today’s NHL hockey player in California pays 36.4%, is maxed on FICA and other payroll taxes, pays the Franchise Tax Board 10% IIRC. I dont’ care what you make, seeing 2/3’s of your paycheck gone before you get tot he bank has to bite. I guess that’s not too different from a guy who’s caught in AMT and pays child support.

Still, how many of us married guys just turn the check over and remain grateful they let us live with them? 😉 But I digress.
