Yeah well I’m not sure I can use that asset. And that’s how Ilya Kovalchuk became a healthy scratch.

“It’s part of playing in this league. Guys are in and out of the lineup throughout the season,” captain Jamie Langenbrunner said.

Hundred million dollar guys?

Pretty much everyone except Devils owner Jeff Vanderbeek and Ilya Kovalchuk saw this coming. Kovy is just not a Devils kind of player, yet. He can learn to be one. The process will be in fits and starts.

The Devils aren’t the NHL’s only team with a superstar struggling to learn team first hockey. The Washington Capitals have a whole room full of those guys.

Have to hand it to Devils rookie coach John MacClean. Vanderbeek might hand him something. According to Rich Chere of The Star/Ledger, “John MacLean said the decision to scratch a healthy Ilya Kovalchuk from Saturday night’s game against the Sabres was his alone.

MacLean was asked if Kovalchuk would play Sunday night against the Rangers.

“I’ll make that decision in the morning,” he answered.

It’ll be more than interesting to see how this one plays out. You can bet John MacClean is both the odds on favorite to be the first coach fired of this season and win the Jack Adams as coach of the year.

H-O-L-Y J-U-M-P-I-N,  a one hundred million dollar healthy scratch.

A little like keeping a Faberge egg in a bag on a shelf in the shed beside a box of roofing nails, no?
