Is Randy Carlyle a Jack Adams Trophy candidate?

Cam Cole of the Vancouver Sun takes an out of towner’s look at Randy Carlyle. Sharp eyed Mark Whicker of the OCR dug it out.

Check it out. Let me know what you think. I’ll join in later this evening.

RC talked about players having a very high opinion of themselves and as I read this article it seemed clear to he that he does too.

I found his comments about Scotty and Chris most telling

      Hey again bb,

All coaches are tyrants. Some are just nicer about it. Others are just know how to sell it. Few, maybe no other coach except Randy Carlyle has required the GM to make an annual “You’ll be traded before I fire this coach” rant.

Our Ducks have simplified things this season. I credit Mike Foligno for that. Also the transition from Giguere to Hiller has changed how we play out front. Jiggy discouraged his teammates from blocking shots. No doubt shot blocking has been major factor in how we defend this season.

Mostly though, with the guys blocking shots, we’re not doing the silly Chinese Fire Drill – Keystone Cops pressure the puck carrier stuff Carlyle encouraged in seasons past.

While Randy Carlyle is the Don Rickles of the coaching fraternity, I give him some credit for adapting a little better this season than in other years.

A lot of guys fight change. Some coaches see change as a threat to their very existence on the planet. Former Blues and Kings coach Andy Murray is a prime example. It’s also why he’s out of the NHL, again.

Good article, revealing exactly what you said several times before. And I agree, either he (RC) is getting better and smarter, or Mike Foligno and others were able to convince him to look at the past strategy, which did not worked. Not only we are playing better system and better positioning. Moreover, players now work harder, they step on the ice with more enthusiasm.
    And I like bb’s comment.

      G’day czhokej,

Pronger wasn’t saying anything different than we’ve said either cz. He saw the writing on the wall and was vocal. Well they say Prongs has always been vocal inside the room as well 😉 Maybe the difference was Prongs started saying it outside the room.

Lupul got a little vocal as well this past couple-3 months. I thought of the two of them, Loops & Prongs, when I read bb’s post.

In both situations it’s understandable guys are going to get vocal.

IF RC moves on from hockey he might try Survivor. He’s good at that game.

IMO RC wouldn’t be where he is now without Murray. Those two are “the twiins” off the ice and RC only survives because of BM.
