Breaking: The Trade Watch

Posted: 02/26/2011 by bc in Uncategorized

Per Mike Brophy tweet, Brad Richards wants to stay in Dallas, but has indicated he’d work with GM Nieuwendyk to do what is best for the team.

Broph is no gossip girl. He doesn’t tweet often. Dallas may get an offer it just can’t refuse.

We’re already down to less than 48 hours to go before GM’s are reduced to watching and thinking ahead to next season. This weekend is every GM’s last chance to impact his team.

Maybe one fighting the temptation to do something, anything is Mike Gillis of the Vancouver Canucks. The gossip girls haven’t been shy about touting many trades that haven’t happened. Even the new girl on the net, NHL Sources Say advised Gillis that “Brad Boyes for Mason Raymond would be a great trade.”I predict a bright future for NHL Sources Say. This gossip girl takes rumor inventing to a whole new level by combining gossip and advice. This, gossip with advice, is the fave formula of Hollywood columnists and junior high school girls.

Gillis told the Canadian Press today, “The only reason (to trade) would be for more experience,” … “We’ll see it that comes our way. If it does, then we’ll think about it. If it doesn’t, we won’t.”

Look for the Canucks to maybe add a gritty veteran forward for the fourth line.

Detroit Red Wings did try to sign UFA Evgeni Nabakov but lost him to the Islanders on entry waivers. Brian Rafalski’s back spasms and Valterri Filppula’s sprained MCL are concerns but IF do anything, look for a veteran backup goalie. Red Wings have less than $400k of cap space available according to NHL Numbers.

Paul Holmgren has already upgraded the Flyers depth scoring acquiring Kris Versteeg from the Leafs. He added depth to the back line today by snagging former Duck Nick Boynton off waivers. Teh gossip girls say he’ll add a goalie but Holmgren adn Laviolette have shown confidence in Russian rookie Sergei Bobrovsky. Brian Boucher is 4-0-0 with a sizzling .946 SP and a GAA of 1.72 in his last 4 games played. Flyers need to get and keep former Duck Chris Pronger healthy.

Rookie GM Steve Yzerman has been absolutely brilliant correcting the mistakes caused by the previous owners in Tampa. This team doesn’t really need anything but watch for Stevie Y to pick off another under the radar gem like Dwayne Roloson.

San Jose Sharks added puck moving D-men Ian White from Carolina last week. With Antero Niittymaki on IR, Sharks may shop for a veteran backup for Antii Niemi. Unlike previous seasons the Sharks have taken their game up a notch at the right time.

If not for their goalies Tim Thomas and Tuukka Rask, Bruins would be more pretender than Eastern Conference contender. Bruins could stand some improvement at forward and defense. Boston could be a big player if they’re willing to move draft picks. Peter Chiarelli holds the title of GM. Some, including me, believe that President and Alternate Governor Cam Neely is the last word.

That covers the Stanley Cup contenders. Now let’s look at the pretenders.

Phoenix Coyotes might be just one point a game forward away from joining the contenders. The ‘Yotes were a joke until they got a goaltender and a coach who knows how to keep things simple. IF GM Dan Maloney gets the go ahead to spend some money, Phoenix could be a late player.

Washington Capitals have disappointed all season. Would Ducks fans trade Getzlaf, Ryan & Perry for Ovechkin, Backstrom & Semin? The chatter has been about the Caps suspect goaltending. The most talked about goalies linked to the Caps are Vokoun & Giguere. Look for Oilers to ship Nicholai Khabibulin East. Caps don’t want his contract but The Bulin Wall might be the best fit and he already has a Stanley Cup ring.

Dallas has been the surprised team of the Western Conference this season. They appear to be righting the ship after hitting a wall. My bet is that the Stars keep Brad Richards and make the playoffs. GM Joe N. got his puck moving D-man acquiring Alex Goglioski from Pittsburgh for power James Neal and Matt Niskanen. Could use a genuine match-up, shut down D-man.

Montreal Canadiens shocked the hockey world by defeating both Washington and Pittsburgh and advancing to the ECF last season. Habs proved the maxim, offense sells tickets, defense wins championships. Injuries have decimated their blue line and the experts say Montreal needs a big forward. As Ducks fans know well, GM Pierre Gauthier is anything but predictable.

Pittsburgh Penguins are missing Sidney Crosby and Evgeni Malkin is out for the year. Amazingly they still hang on to the 4th seed in the East. Just as amazingly nobody is talking “Flower” for the Vezina. Thomas is winning it barring a collapse but you’d think Marc-Andres Fleury would garner an honorable mention. Ray Shero acquired the long sought after power forward in James Neal. Look for the Pens to acquire a veteran pending UFA center like Devils Jason Arnott or Panthers Marty Reasoner.

That’s about it for the pretenders. We now move on to the wannabe’s as in wants to be in the playoffs.

Los Angeles Kings fans will certainly take umbrage at finding their in the wannabe category. All you need to know about Kings is that one of their biggest corporate sponsors is a bail bondsman and their second most popular blogger is a Hollywood casting agent, gossip girl and admitted crack head. Kings need at least one top 6 forward and depth D-men. Retooling their fan base would certainly help their image.

Speaking of gossip girls Eklund and Matthew Barry does anybody anywhere really believe that the Dallas Stars will trade Brad Richards to division and playoff rival Los Angeles Kings? The Stars face the Kings 3 times down the stretch. Yeah, trade a guy to a division playoff rival and risk him beating you 3 times and costing you a playoff spot. Sure.

IF there’s anything at all going on between the Kings and Stars regarding Brad Richards it’s only that Lombardi is being played to drive up the price to the eventual winner.

At various points in this season Minnesota Wild lost their top 2 goalies,  their 1st and 3rd line 2 centers, their No. 2 D-man and still they find themselves 6th seed in the NHL. Depending on which gossip girl on which day GM Chuck Fletcher is a buyer, seller, standing pat and could be fired. With Mikko Koivu out, look for Fletch to maybe grab a center. With Backstrom healthy he might make Jose Theodore available. Three time 20 goal scorer Chuck Kobesaw could be added to a package for a top 6 forward, preferably a center. Would the loaded down the middle Avs take Theodore back? Oilers? Florida?

New York Rangers acquired Bryan McCabe to improve their PP. The Rags are playoff bound but unless King Henry stands on his ear, NY isn’t going anywhere.

They are said to be a seller. Buffalo is my best bet for the one team currently out of the playoffs to make it. It seems like they are loaded with underachievers upfront. Last year’s Calder winner Tyler Myers is going through the sophomore jinx. They still have Ryan Miller between the pipes. Do they blow it up or add to it? we’ll know for sure in about 24 hours.

Nashville Predators have hit the skids. All of a sudden this may not be Coach Trotz year to finally take home a long deserved Jack Adams Trophy. The owners can’t/won’t spend so GM David Poile’s hands are tied.

GM Bargain Bob Murray has added top 9 forward Maxim Lappiere, top 4 D-man Francois Beauchemin, Jarkko Ruutu, Ray Emery and Ray Emery since December. In that time our Ducks advanced from 14th in the West to a share of the Pacific Division lead and now find themselves 11th outside of the playoffs. A reporter told me this week that Henry Samueli places a high priority on stability. So Henry, just how is that stability thing working out for ya? Well, our Ducks missed the playoffs last season. If they do again that qualifies as stable.

Columbus Blue Jackets have fought back into playoff contention after being written off by many just a couple of weeks ago. Look for Columbus to do something if only to show the team and the fans that they’re willing.

Franchise player Eric Staal is listed as day-to-day with one of those above the waist injuries. It won’t be easy to hold onto the 8th seed if Staal is out for an extended period.

St. Louis and Colorado decided to address their respective cores. Ottawa and Florida have been active selling off vets for picks and prospects. Toronto is a seller in denial. New Jersey, Buffalo, Edmonton seem to be doing more listening than talking. Islanders have a couple of untouchables and a bunch of guys nobody wants.

I think we’ll see one, maybe two blockbusters get done in the remaining hours before the gavel comes down. Sens Jason Spezza, Devils Patrik Elias are two names that spring to mind. Elias to the Kings makes all kinds of sense but will probably not happen because it makes sense.

Whatever happens this is one the most exciting days in the season. It’s 1:02p.m. PST. After a quick check of the more credible websites I see no new moves  are reported. It’s safe to post this now.

  1. buick22 says:

Just as a side note, Konopka is available, and we are mentioned in the bidder category. I would like to see them get some scoring help in SYR, they got a fighter, and a D man, they really need a vet goalie. Also “Down goes Brown” a satirical blog about the Leafs, played a joke by getting a bunch of their blog followers to tweet in unison a variation of Lupul traded to Isles, or good luck on Long Island, etc…Flyers website reported he had apparently been moved…hilarious yes, but not right to do to someone, even Lupul.

    • BackCheck says:

Hey buick22, I learned something from Joffrey Lupul this season. Next time I see or hear a Duck talking off script I’ll report that guy as a short-timer. We saw it with Wisniewski, and Pronger too. Third time establishes a consistent pattern of behavior that holds up in court.
