Round ll Playoff Preview

BackCkeck’s Blog playoff predictions wasn’t a total washout and embarrassment. Figures it would be the freakin’ Wings that decimated this Ducks blogger’s upset pick by sweeping the Coyotes.

Vancouver did beat Chicago eventually but Raffi Torres scored the winner and I did post, This season the ‘Nucks depth, even without Manny Malhotra, is the difference.

Sharks dispatched the Kings in six instead of the five I predicted. Kings didn’t actually gut out a win rather; the Sharks didn’t show up for Game 2. Jonathon Quick did steal one for the Hollywood Hosers in Game 5.

I passed on predicting our Ducks v. Predators. Prediction? No prediction. I think our Ducks can win this but I don’t know if they will. It really comes down to the hearts and smarts.

Your fearless prognosticator heads into Round after going 2-1 in the first. by the skin of my teeth 🙂 and Raffi Torres OT goal.Nashville Predators @ Vancouver Canucks

The Nucks survived Chicago and in so doing exorcised a demon. Now the Stanley Cup favorite will face a different challenge. The Predators match up well against the vaunted Canucks depth and are arguably the NHL’s hardest working team. Vancouver should win but Nashville has nothing to lose now. The Preds have already exceeded expectations and should be loose. As Chris Ross points out, Roberto Loungo has to prove he’s a big game goaltender.

I’m taking the Preds in an upset. Nucks make too many errors, have too many breakdowns, have a banged up blueline and Rinne is capable of being the better goalie over a seven game series.

Unusual and meaningless stat but I add it here just to give Nucks fans the willies. Since the winning the Cup in 2007 the Ducks have lost three playoff rounds, including the recent series against Nashville. In the two previous defeats to Dallas in 2008 and Detroit in 2009 the winner went on to win their next round.

Detroit Red Wings @ San Jose Sharks

Are the Sharks finally ready for prime time? They made it to the Western Conference Final last season after beating these mostly same Red Wings in five games. However, these mostly same Red Wings were pushed to limit in a grueling seven game series by the Coyotes. Just a hunch but the winner of this series will represent the West in the SCF.

Don’t bet against Niemi in the playoffs. Sharks prevail but it could go the distance.

Tampa Bay Lightning @ Washington Capitals

Since January the Caps have gradually earned the respect of the peers. Alexander Ovechkin, like Bolts GM Steve Yzerman sacrificed personal stats and glory for the sake of his team. The O Man even scores greasy goals now. Incredibly, Coach Bruce Boudreau, who’s own defensive play kept him out of the NHL is the guy selling and implementing defense first hockey in Washington.

Roloson can steal game or two but the Caps go  on to the ECF.

Boston Bruins @ Philadelphia Flyers

Can Tim Thomas and/or Tuuku Rask steal a series? Yes either can and either or both will have to for Boston to beat Philadelphia. As Buffalo, another team with a great goaltending and a couple of dangerous players learned, the Flyers are just one deep and complete hockey team.

Still, Thomas and/or Rask should be good for two Bruins wins. Flyers in six, maybe seven.

  1. I’m glad to say I did pretty well on my predictions. I haven’t posted on my blog in a while, I’ll start up again in a day or two.
