I’m no insider but every once in a while, well put another way, even a blind squirrel finds a nut now and then. This is one of those posts.

Ryan Getzlaf has been working out most of the summer for the first time in his career. He’s said to be in the best shape of his life. Bobby Ryan has a personal trainer putting him through rigorous two-a-days at his Idaho hideaway. Each player has accepted the bar set by Corey Perry last season as his own personal goal.

Corey Perry and Andrew Cogliano are also kicking up their personal programs to twice a day workouts.

This doesn’t necessarily mean that Getz and Bobby have an eye on adding to their trophy cases as Pears did. It does mean that Getzlaf and Ryan will start the season in what might well be the best shape of their respective careers. It does mean that Getzlaf and Ryan are each paying the price necessary to take their game to the next level.

It’s long been said of Ryan Getzlaf that he can be as good as he wants to be. Getzy is proving he wants it. And he wants it bad. Bad enough to work harder than he has in his career. So far we’ve watched Getzlaf take it up a notch for 3 or 5 or 20 games stretches. This summer our Ducks captain is preparing himself for an 82 game and then some run.

Bobby Ryan is a very level-headed young man. Of the three, Ryan has had to work the hardest. He came up following the Cup year when our Ducks just didn’t have the depth to help a young guy along.  With the addition of Cogliano, who the Big 3 have embraced, Ryan might finally be awarded some consistency in his assignments and line mates.

And all this is why Teemu Selanne is excited. As has been suggested on this blog and other places as well, don’t be surprised if Cogliano skates  alongside the Finn twins. Cogs doesn’t have the sandpaper Blake brings but Andy gets somewhere fast as opposed to Blakey who gets nowhere faster than any man in the NHL. The point is Cogliano is much better positional player than Blake. That’s due to his vision or what’s also called the ability to read & react.

What is being created this summer is a very healthy competition among a bunch of guys committed to earning the respect of their teammates. It’s the kind of competition that creates a dynamic, spirit or buzz that enables 23 guys to share in each other’s individual success as well as the success of the team.

This Ducks team is establishing camaraderie in August. That is very special.
