Vancouver Canucks have acquired LW David Booth, AHL Steve Reinprecht and a 3rd round 2012 Entry Draft pick from the Florida Panthers for Mikail Samuelson and Marco Sturm. For those now playing money puck the Panthers moved $6.3million in salary obligations and took on $4,750,000 all of it applies to the cap. The difference is Reinprecht’s $2,050,000 is playing in the AHL and reported to the ‘Nucks affiliate, the Chicago Wolves. Bottom line is the ‘Nucks created $500k in cap space while taking on $1.55million in salary obligations. Let’s call the third round pick the cost of money.
Three years ago David Booth was a rising young star coming off a break out season when Mike Richards clocked him in the neutral zone. Booth spent most of 2009-10 recovering from the concussion. Last season he scored 23 goals, 40 pts and minus -31 playing on a bad hockey team. If can recapture the spark that produced 31 goals and 60 pts and plus-10 in 2008-09 the ‘Nucks got a steal. Vancouver is a good spot for Booth to refresh his career. Booth will skate alongside Ryan Kesler. The pair have a history dating back to their minor league days in Detroit youth hockey.
For the Panthers they get a couple of vets who can contribute and will likely be moved at the deadline for picks or prospects.
