A lot to like on Team USA

America’s entry to the IIHF Men’s World, Should we spell men’s menz for the Yes you can play team 😉 but I digress. As if in answer to Rodney King’s, “Can’t we all just get along?” the names on this roster end in vowels AND consonants. The best from NHL’s non-playoff teams has produced a roster full of guys who all can get ‘er done.
Analyse this: The Back Four, Jeff Petry, c-Jack Johnson, Cam Fowler & Alex Goligosky all finished or help setup goals. Upfront USA got goals from Bobby Ryan, Max Pacioretty, Jim Slater and two from Kyle Okposo. Paul Stastny pocketed a playmaker for his efforts. It’s a roster with a lot of weapons.
The first Can/Am game is tomorrow 5/5. Sorry but a search of NBCSports didn’t produce a local listings link. If somebody has one, I’ll post it. I want to see it as well.
Canadians are quick to proclaim themselves the fave. What gets me is the gall of them insisting that their being modest about it, lol. Yeah they’ve got an ever threat in whenever Corey Perry goes over the boards. The next three, Ryan Getzlaf, Dion Phaneuf and Duncan Keith who didn’t always get it done in the NHL this season.
The takeaway is that Team USA is composed of guys who had good years on bad teams. OTOH Canada’s core is guys who are looking for some redemption and payback.

Is there a play on thingz here that I am mizzing ?

    • Yeah, bad joke. There’s something just very American about the Team USA roster that isn’t apparent on the other teams. I don’t mean that our guys are gay. The ethnic mix of the team is broader than even Canada’s.

Interesting thing about Paul Stastny: His father Peter and his two uncles (Anton and Marian) defected form Czechoslovakia, probably 1979. Paul’s older brother Yan has played for the Boston Bruins and some other NHL teams. Anton, Peter and Marian Stastny, three brothers played for a while on the same line for the Quebec Nordiques. I remember them well, because before I defected, they played for Slovak team Slovan Bratislava (approx. 1974-1978). Their offensive line was one of the most productive in the league in the NHL.

    • Paul Stasny wears Stosh #26.
Peter Stastny is a bigger than life story. His story, Marion and Anton and Vlad as well, begins in a one bedroom apartment shared with parents and six siblings. To go from there to getting the opportunity to defect to winning in the NHL and to return home and serve in the European Parliament is just a very compelling story.
The Stastny Bros. formed one the NHL’s top scoring lines with the Nordiques.
You might enjoy this retelling of their defection. It would make for one heck of a movie.

US team beat Canada in OT 5-4. Jack Johnson (Columbus) scored PP goal 2 minutes into OT. Canada tied the score at 59. minute of regulation time.

    • The Americans got ‘er done. Kinda sucks that the IIHF doesn’t publish Standings so that we can monitor progress. They do post Power Rankings though. It’s a tad different over there in other ways as well. Like cz notes, Jack Johnson’s 2 goals including the game winner in OT would automatically gain a 1st Star. Not so at the Worlds, the team gave Best Player to Winnipeg’s Jim Slater.
Canada just got a taste of our Ducks 2011-12 season. An opposition energy line forward outworked and forced an all too full of themselves Canadian squad into taking stupid penalties.
      Go Team USA!!!

I hope it’s readable and understandable.

  6. czhokej says:

European newspapers cover the championship very well and in details. Of course I read Czech periodicals (http://hokejdb.idnes.cz/ms/2012/?view=table) , and if anybody is interested, I could post results and standings here. However, even in Czech, it’s not difficult to understand the standings (Z – means games, V – victories, VP – victories in OT, PP – OT losses).

    • Please do. If you want cz, I’ll list as a contributor so that you can post your own bits. I’ve always been willing to share this platform with everyone currently posting here. It’s why I put my real name out there instead of the BackCheck nick.
BTW, what does BODY mean in Czech?

  7. czhokej says:
