A legend retires

Red Fisher, who began covering hockey in 1954 at the Montreal Star has keyed in his last column at the Montreal Gazette. The most famous quote attributed to him is, “Hockey must be a heck of a game to have survived the idiots running it.” That’s probably as true today as it was back in the day when it’s alleged he first uttered it.
Fisher, 85, won the National Newspaper Award for sportswriting in 1971 and 1991 and has been nominated for award on two other occasions. He was also the recipient of a Lifetime Achievement Award from Sports Media Canada in 1999.
Red covered 17 of the Habs 24 Cup wins. To give that accomplishment some context, consider that Bob Miller has been the Kings play by play announcer for 44 years and has yet to call a single Kings Cup win.
