Ducks Sign Daniel Winnik to Two-Year Contract

The Anaheim Ducks announced today that the National Hockey League (NHL) club has signed center Daniel Winnik to a two-year contract through the 2013-14 NHL season. Per club policy, no financial terms of the deal were disclosed.

Winnik, 27 (3/6/85), has appeared in 366 career NHL games with the Coyotes, Avalanche and Sharks, posting 37-64=101 points with 187 PIM. He appeared in a league-leading 84 games with Colorado and San Jose last season, scoring 8-15=23 points with 52 PIM. Winnik, whose 84 games were the most in the NHL since Sean Avery played 84 in 2006-07 with Los Angeles and the New York Rangers, began the season with Colorado, collecting 5-13=18 points with 42 PIM in 63 games.

Winnick, like Elkins, is another solid vet that the kids will have to push aside during training camp if they expect to be Anaheim Ducks on opening night. Bob Murray has always said he likes competition at camp. this time he’s creating some.

Certainly not a big difference-maker. However, Winnik is one of the best penalty-killing forwards in the NHL.
Is it a plan to build a specialized shut down line around him?

    • bc says:

Winnick averaged over 16 minutes TOI last season. He’s paid $1.8m per year. That says 3rd line to me. It could also mean 4th line with 1st unit PK duty as well. He won 50% of his face-offs last season.
Daniel has lined up at LW as well. My guess is that he’ll line up at center. For who though, Bobby Ryan? Silver on a checking line? Not likely.
This would also indicate that one of Bonino or Holland won’t make it out of camp. Corey Elkins is described as a sound two-way player and is certainly in the mix.
Moving Cogliano up with Getzlaf/Perry is something that could work very well. His speed backs D off the blue line which means either of Getz or Pears should be open as the trailer.
Bobby Ryan alongside Saku/Teemu. Bobby would sure help their ES scoring that has declined in recent years.
Winnick with Bonino and DSP makes some sense for a third or checking line.
Camp is about 6-7 weeks away. A lot can happen cz.
