Talk, Talk, Talk, Yak, Yak, Yak

Apparently that what is going on daily now. Hopefully the mouthpieces will get it done on or before Bettman’s deadline of January 11. Personally, I’m ambivalent and prefer to wait until something actually happens. That something is either an announcement that the owners lockout is ended or that Bettman has decided to extend his deadline or cancel the season.

Corporate media, vested as it is in there being a season of sorts spins every twist and turn in its most lockout ending light. I’m not convinced. These hockey bargainers are lawyers. They’re people who charge us $10,000 to save us $1000 and then brag about winning the $1000.

What bothers me most about this process is that the number one hockey issue, player safety has been ignored. Maybe there’s a player safety committee with sub-committees out there somewhere but little to no attention has been paid to it.

So we shall see what happens. At least the owners didn’t engage in more juvenile theatrics upon receipt of the players’ most recent counter offer. This time they stayed engaged in the process.

Maybe the poison pill of Bettman’s deadline will contribute to a positive outcome.

The players for their part hired the pre-eminent collective bargainer in all of sport. They prepared to lose a year according statements from numerous agents and advisers.

So will we have NHL hockey this month? Jeez, I hope so, maybe the poison pill of Bettman’s deadline will contribute to a positive outcome. The zeitgeist is, this isn’t so much about money as it is about ego and pride.

As you already know, the only losers are the folks who pay for it all, we fans and the sponsors.

  1. In the meantime, it’s been fun watching the WJC!!

Welcome to the board, Bill. DUH@me for not covering the WJC. That’s a real missed opportunity for the blog. Didn’t realize ahead of time that NHL Network was broadcasting the games. Caught parts of games last week when I wasn’t playing Barbie Beach House with a grand daughter.
