Ducks take Division with a 3-0 character check win over Edmonton

Ducks fans our team is returning…over 20+ sacrificing block shots, forwards returning to defense to help clear the puck, goaltending continues to give us a chance, skating has returned, and we are getting contributions from the entire team…we are heading in the right direction.

Love the Cogs, Koivu and Winnik line… Dvorak and Vatanen continue to impress, well done!

Fasth made 24 saves for his fourth shutout of the year. Getz, Dvorak and Vatanen scored for our Ducks. Edmonton goalie, Khabibulin kept it respectable. The win secured second place in the Western Conference playoffs.

We started the scoring six minutes in on the power play as Getzlaf calmly slipped his 15th past Khabibulin. We went up 2-0 after Etem sent a sweet no-look backhand pass to Dvorak for an easy open-net. Vatanen made it 3-0 with a bullet through traffic that found the top corner of the net.

Team thoughts on victory…

“It feels great to capture the division,” said Fasth, “We still have to keep working hard, but the last two games have been a step in the right direction for us. I think we were even better in this game than we were the night before. We still have things to work on before the playoffs, though.”

“First and foremost we needed to get back to our game and playing well,” said Beauchemin. “We needed to get some confidence and score some goals. To get two wins here was good for us and it’s great to get wrap up the division, but we still want to get better and have some real momentum going into the playoffs.”

Note: the victory comes without the services of Sbisa (lower body), Souray (lower body), and Bobby Ryan was a late scratch with an illness.

Great accomplishment, and good hockey last night. We played our good system with structure, created a lot of chances, and now we can focus on the first round of play-offs.

cz…I hope we can continue this temp against Vancouver and the Yotes…nailing these teams will definitely allow us to set the tone in round one…

@cz & U, it was a good win but it was only Edmonton.
Not sure how much focus we can put on the playoffs until our opponent is known. With two games to go we could draw either of San Jose, Minnesota, Columbus or Detroit. Dallas has a mathematical though improbable shot at 7th seed.
Our focus for now must be on improving our game.
Our next opponent, the much more scrappy Vancouver Canucks handled the Chicago Blackhawks 3-1. We’ll have to take it up a notch to beat them Thursday night.

I agree bc, Edmonton is no measuring stick. The game against Vancouver should tell us more. However, neither team wants to risk injuries, and both have their play-off seeding wrapped up. However I hope that we will play again our system, with structure and good positioning, and not the messy performance like against Calgary. So it’s possible that we will not see full tempo and effort against the Nucks. I also hope that BB will not change the line combos anymore. “You”, do you think that our coach may even rest some top players? We also need to practice defense-first system, it may become a necessity in the playoffs.
