Breaking: Ducks in deep on Trading Bobby Ryan

GM’s are burning bandwidth as this posted. This story is developing as bits are breaking. There’s a lot of wild speculation going on but here’s the straight skinny:

Yes, our Ducks are prepared to move Bobby Ryan. It could happen over the weekend.

Ducks firmly believe we are close to contending for the Stanley Cup. Our Ducks brain trust, Murphy, McNab, Burke, Niedermayer, Boudreau and others are of the mind that 2nd line center, not the blue line is the weak spot. As Ducks fans know we attempted to give that role to Bobby but it didn’t work out.

Among the things that Brian Burke has been up to is scouting the pro ranks for that seemingly ever elusive 2nd line center. This shouldn’t be taken as a sign that the team doesn’t believe in Nick Bonino or Peter Holland. Fact is, neither has shown enough to spur confidence that they could hold down the second line center role on a Cup contending team.

The team firmly believes that Etem and/or Palmieri are about to experience breakthrough years in 2013-14. We are holding a spot and cap space open for Teemu Selanne. Secondary scoring is no longer perceived to be an issue.

In a nutshell, Ryan will be moved for an established second line center or to create cap space because we’ve signed a second line center. Think guys like Vincent Lecavalier, Danny Briere or Mike Ribeiro as pending UFA’s we might sign. On the trade front anything can happen, especially if we are essentially dumping Ryan’s contract to make room for an Unrestricted free Agent.

I have more on how Ryan is handling all this but will share that when I get the go ahead from a source close to Bobby.

IMO – Bobby has always been very emotional – when he’s in a scoring slump – he gets into a mental/emotional funk and that only makes things worse. Like many I had hoped he’d be all we thought he could be – but after this past season I don’t think he can.

I’m OK with a trade – a good trade not just a so so trade

The trade could be a salary dump to make room for some higher priced UFA. We have to factor the UFA as part of the return. Something like, we sign Reibero, Lecavalier or Briere and move Ryan for draft picks and prospects could well be how it goes down. The interesting thing is that we have the cap room along with the 10% summer float to make it happen.
