It’s being described in various places as a bio-pic and documentary. Whatever it is, director Juuka Pekka-Siili’s film, Sel8nne, entirely in Finnish is being released in Finland on Friday the 27th.

It isn’t likely Teemu will get time during the season to redo his part in English. We’ll take any accurate English version thank you.

Here’s a look at the trailer with English subtitles.

“I have been asked a couple of years now about doing this film, but until now I have answered that I don’t have the time for this kind of project and I’m not sure I want to part of a project this magnitude,” Selanne told Finnish website mtv3.fi last year. “But the [Jari Litmanen, a Finnish soccer legend] documentary gave me courage that maybe I could do a movie, too.”

“As a hockey fan, I want to see a lot of great goals and passes, too” (director) Siili said. “But I’m interested in the anatomy of the superstar, to go under the skin with the viewer. To show who Teemu really is as a person, how he became what he is today, what experiences he’s had with wins and losses, sacrifices and learning experiences and what will he take from all this after his career.”

A posting under the handle semipro shared this on the AnaheimDucks.com fans board:

Had lunch a few feet from Teemu & fam today. I leaned over and told his wife, “one more year”…she said, ” I told him no”. Food for thought, but I think he’ll try once more.

The post was readily dismissed on the Ducks board and there should be no doubt that if Teemu decides to play that Sirpa will support his decision. Make no mistake though, this is Teemu’s and not Sirpa’s decision. At the same time anyone who’s been married for more than 5 minutes knows Teemu will consider her wants and those of his family.
One certainty is that money is maybe 5th or lower on Teemu’s list of priorities. Aside from the team needing him, Teemu’s possible retirement is a pure hockey story because money likely isn’t a critical factor. This is all about a guy who’s asking himself if he’s willing to pay the price to compete on a professional level. Part of his consideration is if his family is also willing to pay the price.
I followed up with ‘semipro’ for the back story. Did he get a sense of her passion? Semipro’s take on it is, “She bordered on being very disappointed if he DID play next year. ”
Again, this is what it is. A first hand report on a conversation with Sirpa Selanne regarding Teemu’s hockey future.
My take is that Teemu will be back. I hear in his voice a feeling of unfinished business associated with this team. He really does, like the vast majority of us, believe this team is better than its record. Secondarily, is the personal milestones, not the least of which  is a 20 year NHL career as opposed to a 19 year career. He’s already the top Finn to have ever played the game. In a few categories, Selanne’s accomplishments stand alongside all time greats like Gordie Howe, Wayne Gretzky, Mario Lemieux, Mike Bossy, Guy Lafleur, Marcel Dionne, Phil Esposito, Brett Hull and yeah, Jarri Kurri.
You can bet that when Teemu makes the decision, Sirpa will take a deep breath alongside him and commit for another season. And 2012-13, assuming no lockout, will be his last. Just a guess but at the end of the day retiring from a playoff team is a whole lot more satisfying than the present. Especially when Flash is still part of the solution.

Lockout? Yeah maybe. They really are that stupid. This one smells so much like 1994-95. Major new TV deal, attendance and revenue is up overall. The relative value of the USD has made Canadian teams profitable. Yeah, amazing that it wouldn’t be the first time under Bettman that the Stakeholders (owners/players) squandered equity. Somebody tell me Bettman and the stakeholders aren’t stupid squared?
OTOH, a 48 game regular season schedule might work for our Ducks.

If you’re going to the game and haven’t purchased your tickets yet, you’ll get a discount by using this HOPE link. It took my a good ten minutes to work my way through supporting this charity. I’ve known 3 people who ended their own life. It’s surprising to discover that I’m still angry at them. Is there a more selfish act? Frankly, I’m not sure why I’m supporting this but there you go. Maybe some good will come from it.

The Skinny: Each team has hit the skids losing 3 of its last 4 games. The Oilers bring the #1 ranked PP against the NHL’s second most penalized team. If the officials are looking to make a statement this could be their game. IIRC NHL rosters expand  Thursday March 9. Don’t look for much change before the weekend.

Milestones: Teemu Selanne is one point shy of tying fellow Finn Jarri Kurri for 19th spot on the NHL All Time points leader board. Flash also leads all Ducks in points this season. Bobby Ryan needs six goals in the remaining 16 games to reach 30 goals for the fourth consecutive season. Corey Perry needs 9 for 40.
